MEET OUR PASTOR

Rev. Michael D. Chance is a dedicated pastor and native of Norfolk, Virginia, who has faithfully led New Mt. Vernon Baptist Church for the past 17 years. His journey in Christian leadership began in 1997, at the age of 27, when he accepted the call to serve as an ordained deacon, following a thorough examination by the late Rev. Jake Manley and the Bethany Baptist Church congregation. After a period of deep reflection and struggle, Rev. Chance answered the call to preach the Gospel in 2000, delivering his initial sermon in April 2001. 

 Currently residing in Chesapeake, VA, Rev. Chance’s educational path began at St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, NC, where he attended on an athletic scholarship and majored in Early Childhood Education. He later earned his Master of Divinity from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University. 

 In addition to his pastoral duties, Rev. Chance serves the community as the Re-Entry Specialist for the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Michael Moore. He is married to Mrs. Tawanna Boone Chance of Portsmouth, Virginia. 

 Rev. Chance’s love for the Lord guides his mission to empower God’s people to become holistic disciples of Jesus Christ. He is also a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
