In 1935, a group of dedicated believers established New Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, laying the foundation for a thriving community of faith. Rev. F. G. Sharpe was appointed as the first pastor, followed by Rev. E. C. Walton. Under Pastor Walton's leadership, the church burned its mortgage the same year, symbolizing financial freedom and spiritual progress.

The next chapter in the church's history was led by Dr. J.R. Wilkerson, who firmly believed in the power of God and the strength of faith. The congregation moved from South Green Street to Wythe Street during his tenure, marking a significant milestone in the church's journey.

In 1978, Rev. Vernon Lee was called to serve as pastor. Over the next ten years, Rev. Lee introduced several well-known plays and musical presentations, using the arts to spread the gospel and engage the community in worship.

In 2008, New Mt. Vernon Baptist Church welcomed Rev. Michael D. Chance as its pastor. Pastor Chance ushered in a new era, introducing millennium ministries and a distinctive style of worship that continues to shape the church today.
